Downdetector indicated the email service, used by around 1.5billion people worldwide, is having issues stopping people from accessing messages.

“I am trying to log into even though I had a back up email registered and a number but for some reason they changed that too to my old number which is not functional anymore.
“Can someone please tell me what is going on I need answers.”
One fed up user said: “Is anyone encountering issues sending/receiving?”
Another said: “Is #gmaildown? Any #techtwitter would know why I’m unable to open #gmail while verifying from my phone?”
People started reporting issues with their email at around 11pm.
It is currently unknown what has caused the outage or how long it will take to fix.
